I don’t mean to be rude, but this article is only slightly correct. If you want a high quality fan that will last it won’t be cheap, but it will make you happy for what you pay.

You’re correct about the size, it needs to be proportional to the room. If you’re in doubt, there are usually specifications that companies have available to help you pick the correct size.

First off, Panasonis is not even a ceiling fan brand. Panasonic is, but they don’t offer air circulating fans in the US anymore. The fans in the provided picture are Casablanca Fan Company models, called the Panama. Casablanca and Emerson are some of the best companies in today’s market and will remain quiet and reliable and may last longer than you if taken care of properly (there are Casablanca and Emerson fans from the 1980′s still working great today). I don’t recommend home center brands, they’ll last you a few years then burn out and you’ll have to get another fan again.

That small light thing is completely untrue. Light kits can be just the same as a regular light fixture, in fact they often are. You can replace any light fixture with a ceiling fan and light kit and have the same or more light output as the previous fixture, and can often be dimmed down to hardly any light at all for night time use.
